The Shocking True Story of Twin Chickens

Baby Chicken

In the film Chicken Run, the two rats, Nick and Fetcher, make a deal with Rocky for all his eggs, only later learning that they’ve been conned because, “It’s a lady thing, apparently.” But at one point, Nick asks how the egg is coming, and Rocky says, “This is a double yolker.”

That got me thinking. It isn’t that I’m unaware of double and even triple yolk eggs. I really like chickens and I used to care for a clutch of chickens. But my experience with a multiple volk was in the context of a frying pan. Rocky’s comment made me think, “What would happen if the eggs had been fertilized and allowed to hatch?

How Are Twin Chickens Created?

I guess I should point out something that may come as a bit of a surprise to some people. That hard casing that we call an egg is not, in fact, the egg. The egg is the inside.

It is released into the hen’s oviduct. Once there, the shell is created around it. On occasion, a hen will release two (or more) eggs into the oviduct. In that case, the shell will form around the eggs.

Can Twin Chickens Survive?

When I started researching this article, my big question is whether twin chickens survive in nature. As it is, there is very little room inside the shell for even a single chick. On the other hand, double yolk shells are larger than normal shells as you can see in this image.

Double Yolk Comparison

There are two potential problems that make twin chickens unlikely. And strangely, they are both due to the size of the egg: both because it is too big and because it is too small.

Problem 1: Egg Too Big

Because twin eggs are large, hens occasionally become egg bound. This is more or less what it sounds like: the egg shell gets stuck in the hen’s oviduct. Egg size isn’t the only reason for this, however. It happens to very young hens, obese hens, those with too little calcium or too much protein.

Check the link above if you want more information. Lisa Steele, the woman behind Fresh Eggs Daily, has all the information — and helping a chicken from this fatal problem is actually a lot less complicated than you would think.

Problem 2: Egg Too Small

The second problem that limits the survival of twin chickens is that despite the larger shell, there is too little room for the two chicks. This doesn’t mean that twin chickens are doomed in the wild, however.

According to Steele in private correspondence, “A double-yolked egg can hatch on its own, but rarely do both chicks make it because there’s just not enough room inside the shell for both to develop correctly. But it can happen.”

Why Do Hens Create Twin Eggs

Multiple-yolk eggs are much more common among hens who are just starting their laying careers, and those who are at the end of them.

But in Asia, hens are bred to produce multiple yolk eggs because they are seen as a kind of delicacy. I’m not sure how nice that is to the chickens, but regardless, much worse is done to chickens in this country.

A Live Birth!

My sister pointed me to two videos of hatching twin chickens. They were created six years ago by a woman (Rebecca Bowers?) under the account NeedMoreChickens. Sadly, the channel has been closed. Thankfully, I found the first video again! It shows her carefully hatching a pair of twins. It is amazing, delicate work. And even though it is over ten minutes long, it’s almost impossible to stop watching. Or maybe it is just because I like chickens so much. Here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5uDKfQ5vGc

There was a second video that showed the chicks a few hours later, dry and fluffy, walking around. She then hatched a second set of twins. One of them was dead. It apparently had been for a while, because it hadn’t developed eyes. That’s sad, but according to the video, all three of the ones that survived were doing great. So with the help of caring humans, twin chickens stand a very good chance of surviving birth, which is awesome!

Wonderful Terriers in Film

UggieIt’s been almost two weeks since Uggie was put to death. He was the dog actor who charmed the hell out of the world in the film, The Artist. He was suffering from prostate cancer. He was 13 years old. I’m told that is 91 in doggy years, but I wonder. The average life expectancy for a dog is 13 years. And according to The Jack Russell Terrier Canine Companion Or Demon Dog the life expectancy range for Uggie’s breed is 13 to 16 years. So Uggie did okay, but he was hardly like a 91 year old human.

Terriers (not just Jack Russells) are probably my favorite kind of dog. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that I used to have a friend who had such a dog. And I took care of him often. And I loved him. I don’t think there has ever been a dog that I’ve been so fond of. He seemed very much like me: excitable and smart — for a dog. In addition to this, terriers don’t especially look like a breed; they look like muts. And that is especially true of the ones like Uggie who have the much better rough coat.

But ultimately, I like terriers because they’ve been used in so many movies I like. And I thought that I would share a few of them with you. The first, and greatest terrier was Skippy. He was a Wire Fox Terrier, born in 1931. He played in some of the best films of the 1930s: The Thin Man, The Awful Truth, and Bringing Up Baby. Here he is as George in that last film:

Then there is Milo in The Mask. He was played by a dog named Max. But I haven’t found much information about him. That seems pretty strange, given that the film is basically a buddy picture with Max getting the good part and Jim Carrey playing the straight man. This has a translation on it, but it doesn’t matter:

And to finish it out, how could we forget Flealick, the handicapped terrier in Babe: Pig in the City. He exhibits all the qualities we expect in a terrier (except working back legs). “Feeling good! Feeling peppy!” (Point of order: I don’t think the dog in the dream sequence is not a good double for the animatronic Flealick.)

Rest in peace Uggie!

If Only the Democrats Debated Like the Republicans

Scott Eric KaufmanThe Democratic National Committee and MSNBC announced Wednesday afternoon the name of the 10 candidates who will be participating in the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2016 electoral season. Only the top 10 candidates in the five most recent polls will be allowed to participate in the debate, which will be moderated by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, and PBS’s Gwen Ifill.

The meteoric rise of media mogul Oprah Winfrey (23%) is posing a threat to both establishment favorite Hillary Clinton (13%) and insurgent socialist Bernie Sanders (11%), both of whom must be concerned with what the beloved Chicago politician-in-training might say given that she’s vowed to “hurt anybody” who criticizes her.

Rachel Maddow told Politico’s Dylan Byers that MSNBC has a secret plan to prevent Winfrey from dominating the debate, but declined to outline it in specific detail. “Rest assured,” she said, “it’s magnificent.”

Joining that triumvirate on the Cleveland stage will be a trio of formerly disgraced politicians who have managed to resurrect their careers in light of the multiple indictments against Hillary Clinton for her role in Benghazigate. Anthony Weiner (7%), Rod Blagojevich (6%), and John Edwards (5%) all hope to escape the shadow of their own comparatively minor failures by hiding in the massive one currently threatening to engulf the Clinton campaign.

Some of the more entertaining candidates with whom they will share the stage are the fading Michael Moore (3%) and the ultimate single-issue candidate, Jenny McCarthy (2%), who will no doubt seek to educate both Toby Keith (1%) and Gary Hart (1%) about the dangers of childhood vaccination. Keith and Hart, meanwhile, will do their best to justify their continued existence during the main event…

Greece Ponies Up for Creditors

And a ponyAthens, Greece — A government spokesman today revealed that the Greek government would honor the Troika’s demand that it transfer ownership of specified airports, ports, and other public assets to an independent privatization fund. Moreover, as a gesture of good faith, the government plans to transfer certain additional assets not specifically identified in the Troika’s proposal, notably a two-year old Palomino mare which had previously been the property of the daughter of an unidentified government minister.

“We offer this as a first step toward repairing relations between the government and our partners in the EU,” the spokesman explained. “Greece is committed to delivering on all of its commitments to the international community. And a pony.”

Crow T RobotQualified? Qualified? Wow, what a question! Me, Crow T Robot, what do I think? Am I qualified? Wow. That’s a heavy burden! How can I make a difference? Can I make a difference? Surely, I’m but a single bot, alone as it were in the vast universe thing. Maybe I can change the world. Perhaps I’ve looked at life from upside down…

What would Joel do in a situation like this? No, I’ve got to learn to think for myself — to stand on my own two foot like appendages. Seize the day. Think globally, act locally. Yes, by God, I can do it! Why I could start a letter writing campaign. Yeah, that would help. And I could organize a bake sale. Or… Hey, we could all help! Come on friends, run to your window and shout, “I’m really cheesed and I’m not gonna hang around til this thing gets better!” Organize an improv group and do guerrilla theater at the food court of your mall. Dress a little differently — make it more exciting for you and your spouse. Or, here’s an idea: pour a little Cajun spice into the party mix and watch the fun. Put on a one man show and talk about your true inner feelings in an emotionally charged, gut wrenching autobiographical account of your warped adolescence, and then watch the grant money come in. Woo! But don’t snap judge me. And then, I know, put a drop of vanilla behind each ear and then you’ll smell like a cookie all day. Or eat an apple — nature’s toothbrush. Ask Mr Owl how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie center. Have you met everyone on your block? Now would be a nice time to start, don’t you think? Hmm? In the classroom, slide your desks together and create an ecology symbol. Police the lives of those around you, and get your sensibilities way the heck out of wack. Parade up and down the street in your underwear. Impose your ideals on others — it’s easy! Crush someone with an emotional word or enigmatic look. You decide. You do it! I’m sick of this! I can’t make a decision. I’m no good at this sort of thing. It’s up to you. I’m passing the buck. To you.

Morning Music: Flaco Jiménez

Flaco Jiménez: the New Face of TerrorErik Loomis at Lawyers, Guns & Money brought my attention to this new terror threat, “More than two hours. More than 30 police, fire, and rescue workers. And more than enough police cars and big trucks to widen the eyes of three dozen youngsters in day care, all to investigate a suspicious package that turned out to be… an accordion.” Loomis blames it all — quite rightly, I think — on previous generations of accordionists like Frankie Yankovic (who is shockingly not Weird Al’s father).

Loomis asked the question that I think is on everyone’s mind, “Will the police arrest Flaco Jiménez for being too awesome on the accordion?” We will have to see. If not, perhaps Donald Trump will go after him. Regardless, I thought we would listen to a little of his music today. Here he is performing with the Dutch band Rowwen Hèze doing the Rocco Granata song “Marina”:

Morning Music: “Fire” as It Was Meant to Be

Fire - Bruce SpringsteenI was complaining recently about Bruce Springsteen’s early work and how I didn’t like its optimism about going out and conquering the world. Well, there’s another thing I don’t like about Springsteen’s early (And later!) work: the sexual posturing. An excellent example of that is “Fire.” Now, I don’t mean to be down on Springsteen. I think he’s always known how silly this is. What I find amazing is that people who thought “Thunder Road” was meaningful when they were teens, don’t now find it at least a little embarrassing.

Anyway, here is Robin Williams doing “Fire” using Elmer Fudd’s voice. This is the way the song was meant to be done:

Fascism in Tim Burton’s Batman

BatmanOver the weekend, I watched the original Tim Burton Batman. As a film, it still works pretty well. But while watching it, I couldn’t get past just how fascist the whole thing was. This is true of all superhero films to some extent. But it is unrelenting here. Normal functioning of the society just doesn’t exist. So we are expected to wait around for our Übermensch to come and save us. And the film ends with the city installing a special light where it can call Batman if things go badly, which of course they will, because things are just as bad as they ever were except that the Joker’s gang is now gone.

There is an irony there too. Batman was responsible for making the Joker. That’s what made the city get so much worse. If he had never existed, then Gotham City would have remained like Chicago in 1920s. Instead, it was turned into a place where you couldn’t even wear makeup. Speaking of which, the Joker’s poisoning of products is perhaps the worst aspect of the fascism implicit in the film. All the police and scientists and hobbyists in the town could not figure it out, but Batman — in his spare time between being a rich playboy and frightening local hoodlums — manages to figure out the key. So it isn’t just that the government is corrupt — all the people are stupid too.

That brings us to Vicki Vale. She first appeared in the comics in 1948. But this film was made in 1989 — well into the women’s liberation movement. Yet the character was more liberated in 1948. Here she is a great career woman — in reputation only. She takes a couple of photos toward the beginning of the film, but mostly she just throws herself at Bruce Wayne. And then, she’s used as a prop for the Joker to lead around. Other than jumping out of the way of some acid, she does nothing but wait around for Batman to save her.

Other than the fact that Bruce Wayne is rich, it isn’t clear what’s so attractive about him (not that that isn’t enough). But especially after she finds out that he is Batman, she ought to run away. And that’s true of the city too. Batman is a deeply disturbed person. He might be fighting the Joker today, but he is very likely to be poisoning the city tomorrow. He generally seems more interested in saving Vicki Vale than the city itself. In fact, there is an interesting scene that starts the film where a family is robbed at gun point. Batman eventually shows up to abuse the robbers, but doesn’t help the family at all.

There are ways to tell stories of collective action. But as a society, we are stuck in Roman times. It’s all about the hero archetype. And that is a fundamentally fascist idea. We need to get past that. There is no one hero who is going to save us. And if there were, we should be worried about it. Because we wouldn’t be in control. And then it really doesn’t matter if it is Batman or the Joker who is our Übermensch. He creates his own moral universe — one that we don’t want to live in.

The ISIS Dildo Flag That Rocked the World

ISIS Dildo FlagI wish I were exaggerating here even a little but I am not. CNN dedicated an entire six and a half minutes to covering, in a tenor of total seriousness and extreme gravity, what they said was an ISIS flag being waved at a gay pride parade, when in fact it was readily and painfully obvious that the “ISIS flag” was in fact a joke flag covered with images of dildos and butt plugs.

“An unnerving sight today at a London gay pride celebration: an ISIS flag among a sea of rainbow colors,” CNN anchor Suzanne Malveaux announced. The word “unnerving” made several other appearances in the very long segment about a flag of dildos and butt plugs.

The segment went on to analyze the photo of the flag in great depth, zooming in especially on the man waving it. A London-based CNN reporter who called in — yes, there were multiple reporters on this, no one covers breaking news like CNN — pointed out with concern, “This man, quite distinctive from the rest of the crowd, he was dressed in black and white.”

Morning Music: Marty Robbins

Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs - Marty RobbinsToday’s Morning Music post is brought to you by JMF. Because of him, I’ve had the Marty Robbins song “El Paso” going through my head all day. He writes regularly over at Twinkie Town. I am not quite sure what it is and I’m too harried to research it right now. But it’s some kind of online community for Twins fans. It’s all very cool, although I probably wouldn’t say that if it were for the Vikings, which are a football team and thus boring.

Anyway, the weekend before last, he wrote, Slump-Break Game 61: Twins @ Rangers. As you probably know, the Rangers are that team that George W Bush was part owner of. It seems to be the only business venture he ever made money on. Of course, I think its kind of hard not to make money with an MLB team given its Congress mandated monopoly.

Anyway, in preparation for the game, JMF wrote special lyrics to the tune of “El Paso.” I’ll give you a taste of them here, but if you want it all, you will have to head on over to his article. It’s quite clever.

There Are Smaller Things to Fear Than Sharks

ChihuahuaAfter the two shark attacks inside of two hours on the same North Carolina beach, it’s not surprising that people get shook up. It could be that normal prey were in the area that attracted the sharks. Or it could just be a statistical fluke. Regardless, it is good that both victims were given immediate help and survived — albeit with life changing wounds. I haven’t been able to find any information on what kind of sharks they were, but one eye-witness said one of the sharks was about seven feet long. My guess would be that it was either a blacktip or bull shark. The blacktips are more common, but the bulls are more likely to attack.

Although I love and respect sharks, I really won’t go in the water. Blame it on Jaws. But I find it amazing that people actually dive with big and dangerous sharks — including great whites. But that’s their business. In general, being around sharks is a lot safer than you would think. For one thing, most sharks aren’t that aggressive. But even the supposed “man eaters” don’t really see us as prey. We are too boney. Not that this is much comfort to someone who just had her arm bitten off.

Christopher Ingraham wrote a good article following these recent shark attacks, The Animals That Are Most Likely to Kill You This Summer. He noted that people tend to dismiss concerns about shark attacks by pointing out things like heart attacks or traffic accidents. These really aren’t very helpful because the fear is not just about dying but the manner of death. Being bitten in half is not how most of us want to go — although it is probably better than getting mauled to death by a bear.

He put together an infographic that lays out our risks. It’s interesting. Looking at the United States from 2001 to 2013, we find that on average, only one person is killed per year by sharks, alligators, and bears. Venomous snakes and reptiles kill six. Spiders kill seven. And shockingly, nine people are killed by non-venomous arthropods — I assume ants. What’s up with that? Let me just say right now that I would rather be killed by a shark.

Similarly, bees and such kill almost 60 people per year. They are the biggest animal killers. But I’m more interested in the animals that we choose to be around — the ones we think of as our friends. Cows kill a lot of people — not because they are mean, but because they are big and people work with them. But dogs are responsible for 28 deaths per year. I’ve written about this, Dog Violence Is Completely Unacceptable. Too often it is one of those aggressive dogs that men with small penises refuse to castrate — usually resulting in the deaths of children and pregnant woman. Horses also kill a lot of people.

But the truth is that we shouldn’t worry about animals killing us. Mistakes made in US hospitals result in roughly 100,000 deaths each year. It’s important to keep things in perspective. Just the same, I don’t see myself making a categorical statement like, “Don’t go into the hospital!”
