Clyde Tombaugh and the Discovery of Pluto

Clyde TombaughOn this day in 1906, the astronomer Clyde Tombaugh was born. He is known for having discovered Pluto. I saw him lecture when he was in his 80s. He was a very charming guy. And the work he did was absolutely the most difficult and tedious of observational astronomy. Basically, he would take a picture of a certain part of the sky on two separate days — usually roughly a week apart. Then, he would display them overlapped — fading from one to the other. And he would note any tiny differences. That’s how Pluto was discovered.

How hard was it? Here are two photographic plates, separated by six days. The arrows indicate where Pluto is. All I can say for sure is that there is no way that I would have been able to notice this difference. It is ridiculously small:

What’s most interesting about Tombaugh’s discovery is that it was a fluke. In the early part of the 20th century, Percival Lowell proposed that problems with Uranus’ orbit could be resolved with a ninth planet: Planet X. According to Lowell, the planet would have to be out at about 45 AU with a mass seven times that of Earth. Well, Pluto does have more or less that distance — but it is quite a lot closer these days. The bigger problem is that Pluto is really small. The initial estimate was that it was about the size of earth. But that estimate has only gone done over time. We now know it is about two-tenths of one percent the mass of the earth. It is less than 20% the mass of the moon. Eventually, it was found that the problems with Uranus’ orbit were due to an error in the mass of Neptune.

Still, Pluto is a cool bit of space debris. And until quite recently, it was the largest bit of space debris that we knew about. But in 2005, Eris was discovered. It is roughly a third more massive. And it is bizarre. But they are all the sun’s children and we love them all.

Fat and Happy Is Better Than Beautiful

Eat, Drink, and Be MerryWhen a man like me who has been skinny his entire life, suddenly finds himself fat you are likely to see some serious work on him explaining why his new hefty size is really a great thing. Now I want to point out — I’m really only David Mitchell fat, not Chris Christie fat. And most people outside of Southern California don’t actually consider Mitchell fat. But the NIH thinks I’m just on the line of “overweight”; and at all times before, I was right on the line of “underweight.” You just can’t win with these people. Or more to the point, I just can’t win.

Truth be told, however, we probably shouldn’t consider people like me overweight. Or at least we shouldn’t when it comes to health. When it comes to nude extras on Game of Thrones, there is a different scale. But I’m afraid that such criteria have blinded our thinking in terms of health. Two years ago, a major synthesis of research involving three million people over decades found that overweight people (with a BMI between 25 and 30) were actually 6% less likely to die during the average period of the studies looked at. That isn’t that big a deal — it could be noise, although the result is statistically significant. What’s more, the effect could be due to better medical care.

What I find far more interesting is that much of the reporting on the study was dismissive. The focus was generally put on the finding that it was still bad to be obese. And indeed it is. And maybe it is good to focus on that in a country where over a third of the population is obese. But if the only finding of the study was that obese people had a higher mortality rate than thinner people, it wouldn’t have been reported in The New York Times. And it doesn’t even seem worth mentioning regarding a study that contradicts the linchpin of what most everyone thinks is required for good health.

I think it is all to do with what we find beautiful. We fetishize youth and thinness. And as a result, we try to justify claiming that being young and thin is healthy. It must be; it’s what is attractive! And this results in almost all advertisements that I see involving young and thin people. That’s even true when the ads are explicitly portraying “old” and “fat” people. According to Plus Model Magazine, ten years ago, plus size models ranged in sizes from 12 to 18; today, they are between 6 (!) and 14. The average American woman is a size 14.

Overall, the main thing is that people should just get on with their lives and accept who they are. The thing about me is that I like eating. And I cook far better than I ever did when I was my old skinny self. And I just can’t imagine starving myself in the name of living a bit longer — especially if those years (Months? Weeks? Hours?) were spent without the joy of my many signature dishes. And this leads me to my main point.

I cook with butter. Butter is wonderful. Butter tastes good. In fact, there are few things as wonderfully delicious as Basmati rice with just a little bit of butter. I could easily live on that. And I really don’t care about the health consequences of my love of fat. As I see it, what is considered “good nutrition” changes every couple of years anyway. And people running around desperately trying to avoid death has always struck me as a criminal act against the gift of life.

It just so happens that today, the good nutrition fad seems to line up with what I do, Pretty Much Everything We’ve Been Taught About Dangers of Eating Fat Is Wrong. I won’t go into all the details of the recent research because I don’t care. I’m going to eat the way I want. Yes, it would be bad to have an all-butter diet. But you wanna know a secret: an all butter diet would taste terrible. My advice: have a diverse and delicious diet, so even if it does kill you, you will have a good time along the way.

Oh, that reminds me: moderate alcohol consumption is good for you too. But again: I don’t actually care. Alcohol is a great drug in that it tells you very clearly how much you should consume. All this information — ideal body weight, fatty foods, alcohol — is the best argument I’ve ever heard in favor of a loving god.

I just watched last night’s The Nightly Show and they were doing the episode about obesity. It isn’t much of a discussion, but it does seem that the issue is in the air.

Penn & Teller Nonsense

Penn & Teller BullshitI came upon a very interesting Rational Wiki article on Penn & Teller. This pair has bugged me for a very long time — especially after their ideological defense of Walmart. Their libertarian views skew everything they do. I generally have a problem when rich and successful people promote libertarianism. It is like someone who’s won a war saying, “Now let me explain why monarchy is the best form of government…” These are guys who had all the advantages of public education, unions and public sector jobs (Jillette’s father was a prison guard), and a safety net that allowed them to risk failure in a field where most fail. Yet now they have convinced themselves that it was all about them, and now they don’t want no stinking government to interfere with them — even at the cost to later generations having the same support that they depended on.

But the duo is interesting in that they are strictly rational when it comes to looking at claims like UFOs or ghosts, but when it comes to politics, they’re hopeless. On their show Penn & Teller: Bullshit! they couldn’t touch on anything even remotely associated with politics without falling into the ideologue’s trap: they started with their conclusion. (In fairness, their approach to UFOs and ghosts is probably just as predetermined — but those subjects have the advantages of having had actual scientists look into them.) Then their arguments were nothing more than setting up straw men to knock down and cherry picking data.

They were most notoriously wrong about global warming. Now a real skeptic looking into global warming would, I don’t know, talk to a scientist? Maybe James Hansen would have something to say on the issue. But Penn & Teller are far too smart for that! They went to the source of the best information on climate change: the Cato Institute. Because when you want objective information, the best place to go is to people who are ideologically committed to the science saying a particular thing. And even better, go to people who are ideologically committed in exactly the same way that you are! That way you can filter any actual information through that prism.

Okay, so that was back in 2003. There was little reason to doubt global warming then, but it was more understandable then. But in the years since, Jillette has only provided apologias for his previous positions. According to Rational Wiki, “In later interviews, Penn stated that anthropogenic global warming was probably real, but claimed that he was talking about not knowing whether ‘the whole package’ (ie the need for government intervention, presumably as opposed to a self-correcting market) was real.” But that’s not true: the duo was clearly making the case that all conservatives were making then, “We don’t know so we shouldn’t do anything!”

Further, Jillette (and Teller too, I assume) has only shown that he is doing the global warming denial steps. They are: (1) There is no global warming; (2) There is global warming, but humans aren’t the cause; and (3) Humans are causing global warming, but there is nothing we can do about it. There’s nothing rational about that. It is just, “I don’t want to believe and so I won’t.” And that makes him as rational and skeptical as your average fundamentalist Christian.

In 2008, the duo did an episode attacking the idea of carbon offsets. At that point, only loons were denying global warming. And there they were complaining about the most conservative response. Rational Wiki pointed out that in the episode, they used Argumentum ad Gorem, or Gore’s Law: “As an online climate change debate grows longer, the probability that denier arguments will descend into attacks on Al Gore approaches 1.” But what do you expect from a couple of libertarians? Rational argument?!

When it comes down to it, Penn & Teller will argue that they are just entertainers, “Just a clown! Just a clown!” But if that’s the case, why not step out of the skeptical movement? Why pretend that you are speaking the truth and not just pushing your own self-serving ideology? Why not stick to what you actually know? I would argue that the reason is because both these men are so deluded that they can’t even see their own biases. The same thing can be said for the New Atheist movement generally. And that’s probably why the New Atheists continue to admire them as their own.

Organic Macromolecules on Comet P67

Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P)You may remember back in November, I went a little crazy about the Rosetta mission to comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P). And I was especially crazy about the lander, Philae, because I thought that through it, the science team would be able to test for organic compounds. This is my main interest in comets: the idea that the building blocks of life (or life itself) could have been seeded onto earth. So when Philae did its big bounce and got jammed up against a cliff wall, my hopes were dashed. But I was mistaken. It turns out that Rosetta can do a whole lot more from a distance from the comet than I had realized.

Last week, Science Magazine put out a special issue on new research from the Rosetta mission. Joseph Stromberg over at Vox provided a good overview, The Rosetta Probe Discovered That Comet 67P/C-G Is Light as a Cork. As the title indicates, 67P has a very low density: roughly that of a cork. It’s porosity is more than 70%. Associated with that, I think, is the fact that the comet has very little water. I assume that the comet once had water, which it outgassed, leaving behind all these pores. So that’s interesting. Also of note is the fact that the water that is on the comet is much “heavier” than earth water — as a percentage, there is three times as much deuterium (“heavy hydrogen” or hydrogen with a neutron).

But the big news is a paper by F Capaccioni and 77 colleagues, The Organic-Rich Surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko as Seen by VIRTIS/Rosetta. The satellite has a spectrometer that looks at visible and infrared light. And looking at the light that bounces off the surface of the comet, they can tell what bandwidths are absorbed and thus determine which chemicals are on the surface. Based upon this, they found very little water and lots of organic compounds. Well, what they say is very much what we expect from scientists: their results are “compatible with opaque minerals associated with nonvolatile organic macromolecular materials.” I have to wonder if creatures had evolved and were building high rises, would they be willing to say much more than that the buildings were compatible with the existence of higher life forms?

Unfortunately, we don’t know what the organic chemicals are. All the spectral data can tell us is that they are “a complex mixture of various types of carbon-hydrogen and/or oxygen-hydrogen chemical groups, with little contribution of nitrogen-hydrogen groups.” DNA and RNA consist of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. But long carbon compounds are primarily concerned with carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The fact that the data indicate macromolecular materials, that would have to be what we are talking about.

This is all very exciting. And this is just what scientists managed to discover so far. In fact, this article isn’t even based on the results of Rosetta while orbiting it. The paper was submitted to Science Magazine back in the middle of October. The main thing to remember is that it is this kind of science that the Rosetta mission is all about. Here in the United States, we tend to focus on the technology side of it, “Hooray! We got a spaceship to orbit a comet! We landed on a comet!” But that’s just the means of doing something much greater. The objective of the mission is to better understand the origins of the solar system. And that work will be going on for years to come. It’s great stuff — the best of what we are.

Anarchy on The Nightly Show

Larry WilmoreIs it the intention of Comedy Central to promote anarchy here in the United States? I’m not talking about revolutionary comedy or contrarian views. I’m talking about something important. I’m talking about map madness.

Thursday on The Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore focused on Cuba. As a result, there were two countries that had themselves displayed in map form. I’m not going to say anything. Just see if you notice anything that doesn’t make sense. You need to take the wide view, however.

One reason I liked The Nightly Show immediately was the south side up map that Wilmore has behind him. I like maps. I like how they distort reality. So it is nice to be reminded with different projections and different orientations. But if you are going to have a south side up map in back of you, you had damned well better have other maps similarly oriented. Both Cuba and China are presented north side up.

What the show is doing is not reminding us of our geographical delusions. Instead, it is creating anarchy!

Afterword

If the show wanted to present maps in random orientations as if to say, “There is no up,” I would not have a problem with that. There is a difference between introducing chaos because the world is chaotic and maps are liars, and just making stuff up. But mostly, I just think that if you are going to play with people’s perspectives, you should really do it. Not that I’m serious about this. And The Nightly Show continues to show great promise.

David Hilbert

David HilbertOn this day in 1862, the great mathematician David Hilbert was born. It’s always hard to write about mathematicians who worked any time in the last couple hundred years. This is because most people find the idea of equations themselves to be highly theoretical. But for a very long time, mathematicians have been more involved in working out things like the theory of equations. So for most people, it is the theory of theory. Mathematicians don’t find solutions to equations, but rather find out fundamental properties of kinds of equations. And even that is rather old — more Évariste Galois than David Hilbert.

Hilbert built on Galois’ work in invariant theory, but he was also very interested in geometry and mathematical logic. Sadly, my grasp of this stuff is tenuous at best. This understandably limits my ability to discuss them. But it isn’t the specifics of the math that I care about getting across. It is just that it so aggravates me that most people have such a skewed notion of what math is. Most people think it is multiplication tables. Yet I can hardly think of a less mathematical thing. For one thing, it is about memorizing. For another, it is about numbers. Math isn’t about numbers! And something you will notice if you look at a discussion of Hilbert space is that numbers are never used! About the only place where numbers are used is in number theory — and even there, you won’t find many numbers, because it is really about the nature of numbers and not the numbers themselves.

Philosophical Underpinnings of New Atheist Sexism

Richard DawkinsI’ve been wondering why it is that the New Atheist movement has had such a problem with sexism. I’m not talking about any of the alleged sexual misconduct here. I’m interested in why men in the movement are so often anti-feminist. The usual answer is that it is just a function of its origins: that the groups that make up the movement have traditionally been overwhelmingly male. While that’s certainly true and an important aspect of the problem, I think that there is a philosophical basis for the sexism in the movement. And it rather gets to the heart of what’s wrong with the New Atheists generally.

Human beings are not especially rational. If we didn’t already know from our experiences, psychology and neuroscience tell us that it is so. It’s very simple: we don’t have the time to make rational decisions about the vast majority of things in our lives. What’s more, most decisions don’t lend themselves to rational thinking. Consider buying a tube of toothpaste: there are endless variables, most of which are purely subjective. This may seem like a trivial example, but humans don’t do much better when picking a president, a profession, or a spouse.

Penn JilletteThe most common statement I hear from people in the New Atheist community is, “I only believe in things that I have evidence for!” But that isn’t what they mean — based upon how they act. What they mean to say is that they only believe in things that science backs them up on. But they rarely understand the science itself. They might know the basics of evolution theory and climate change, but mostly, their opinions are a leap of faith: they have decided to trust the scientific establishment.

There is nothing wrong with that. The scientific establishment is generally a lot more enlightened than other sources of knowledge. But there is nothing fundamentally different from this kind of faith and the faith a Christian might have in her priest because he, like the scientific establishment for me, has never let her down. Clearly, science has a far better track record and I think that Christian would be better off turning to science for most of her questions. But science probably doesn’t have answers for most of her questions anyway, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

There are good sources of information and bad sources of information. The problem I see with the New Atheist community is not their reliance on science. I share their reliance. But they demonstrate an awkward and troubling dependence on one aspect of science: evolution theory. And it poisons their thinking in other areas. It leads to an unconscious (and sometimes conscious) acceptance of pseudoscientific nonsense like social Darwinism, and if not for the Nazis, I’m sure that eugenics would be popular in the movement.

If it weren’t for the hubris of thinking that they are solely guided by objective reality and rationality, this mightn’t be so bad. But thinking that you are only guided by rationality makes it easy to mistake your own prejudices for The Truth™. Take, for example, Penn Jillette’s beliefs about economics and global warming. I don’t think he’s doing it any more, but his arguments against global warming were exactly the same as Jim Inhofe’s. But Jillette’s thinking was based on his libertarian ideology and Inhofe’s is based upon his reading of the Bible.

Similarly, when Richard Dawkins wrote his Dear Muslima letter, it was just his attempt to stifle speech that made him uncomfortable. There was nothing rational about it. In fact, it was an amazing example of cluelessness. It’s like telling a person with an abscessed tooth that she should get over it because many people burn to death each year. Logical, perhaps, but hardly rational.

One thing that science teaches us is that we are all fallible. The processes and institutions of science allow us to slowly muddle our way toward a better understanding of the universe. But the widespread belief among New Atheists that they are ruled by reason and rationality is a delusion — call it the “atheist delusion” if you like. And it allows them to be awfully blind to their prejudices.

Sofia Kovalevskaya

Sofia KovalevskayaOn this day in 1850, the great mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya was born. She made important contributions to analysis and differential equations. We will not talk about her work in math. This is because I still greatly struggle with analysis. Her work with differential equations — notably, classical mechanics — I do understand, but it would be (1) a lot of work for me to write; and (2) boring for you to read. Luckily, she lived a colorful life.

She showed an aptitude for mathematics very young and so her parents encouraged it and hired her a tutor. But women weren’t allowed in university in Russia at that time, so she had to go out of the country. But that was more involved than you might think. She needed her husband’s written permission to do that, so she pretended to be the wife of paleontologist Vladimir Kovalevsky. (Despite never actually marrying, they spent the rest of his life together.) And the two of them were off to Germany and then England (where he hung out with Darwin and she hung with George Eliot) and then to France and back to Germany, where she received her PhD at the age of 24 from the University of Göttingen. She was the first woman in Europe to be given the degree.

She and Vladimir struggled for the next decade, doing things like building houses and electrifying street lights. In 1883, Vladimir committed suicide. But the following year, Sofia finally got an academic position in Sweden. Things were pretty good from then on, although not that good because she was a woman. In addition to her mathematics and physics work, she wrote plays, a novel, and an autobiography. And then she died of influenza at the age of 41.

Global Warming and Polar Bear Attacks

Polar Bear Before AttackCastañeda-Mendez was walking barefoot, halfway across the stream, when Dyer saw something lumbering toward them. “Polar bear!” he shouted. “Get back here! Get back here!” Chase yelled at her husband. “We have a bear!”

The animal was about 150 yards away and walking toward them. Castañeda-Mendez tromped back through the water and the group clustered together on the side of the stream, following the protocol Lagacè had rehearsed with them: Stand together. Make yourself seem big. Make loud noises, especially metal on metal, like the banging of poles.

The bear was larger and had a fuller coat than the female they had seen that morning. Slowly it walked toward them, nose in the air and tongue sticking out, apparently trying to assess the two-legged creatures it had stumbled upon. Despite the group’s banging and shouting, the bear kept coming. While Castañeda-Mendez fired away with his camera, Gross pulled out his flare gun. “I’m gonna shoot,” he told Chase when the bear was within fifty yards. “I think that’s a good idea,” she replied calmly.

The flare shot forward with a flash of light, but the bear kept advancing. It wasn’t until the shell landed in front of the animal, causing a second burst, that the bear turned and took off in a dead run. The group cheered, clapped, and banged their poles together, celebrating their victory. But the bear didn’t go far. It settled on a ledge about 300 yards from their camp and lay there quietly, watching them.

Heinrich Schliemann

Heinrich SchliemannOn this day in 1822, the great archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann was born. He was one of the most important ever in the science. In particular, he was the first person to dig at Hissarlik, which later archaeologists were able to prove was the actual site of the Trojan War, which by the 19th century was thought to be pure myth.

His interest in archaeology started late. Early on he made his fortune as in the import and finance business. The one thing that links his business and archaeology careers is that he had an amazing facility with languages. By his death, he could conversant in over a dozen languages — including Greek, Russian, and Arabic. He retired in 1858, but didn’t start pursuing archaeology for another ten years — when he was pushing fifty years of age. At around this time, he divorced his wife — apparently because she wasn’t willing to travel with him. Then he advertised for a wife in a Greek newspaper and married Sophia Engastromenos, who was his assistant and constant companion to the end.

In his work, Schliemann unfortunately destroyed much of the site because of his belief that old sites had to be deep. He was, after all, self taught. But I’m not sure that the professional archaeologists would have done much better. Still, many people did encourage him to go slowly — advice he rejected. It may have also been a question of temperment. It turned out that seven main cities had been built on top of the site dating from about a thousand years before Troy. The whole story is amazing, and I highly recommend watching In Search of the Trojan War. Here is the first episode of it, which deals with Schliemann and the work that he did:

Comets and the Thrill of Freezing in the Dark

Terry LovejoyAs I get older, I find that my interests turn more and more to “fun” things like astronomy. When I was younger, I wasn’t as interested in it. But being submerged in politics all the time, it’s very relaxing to read about stuff where facts actually matter. Indeed, my interest has been so much increased that I’m doing some work on a pulsar model I published (pdf) 25 years ago. I think I made some errors and I have an idea for improving the overall model. (For the record, I always think I made some errors in everything I’ve published.) Regardless, I’m not doing it for any reason other than that it is fun.

Speaking of people doing astronomy just for fun, meet Terry Lovejoy. He is part of a long line of great amateur astronomers who have made important contributions to the science. In fact, it often seems to me that we ought to hold amateur endeavors in higher regard than professional ones. I mean, amateurs aren’t even being paid. But it does highlight the great lie of economics that everything is about financial incentives. Oh, there the politics come back in! Let’s get back to the pure joy of scientific discovery.

Last August, Lovejoy discovered his fifth comet: C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). I find comets fascinating. Their likely importance in the delivery of water and even organic matter to the planets makes my mind marvel. At the same time, the idea that one of these buggers could slam into the earth and kill us all has a wonderful horror movie appeal. And I’m very pleased that people like Lovejoy are out there discovering comets when they are barely visible at magnitude 15. Polaris has a magnitude of 2, and nothing with a magnitude of 7 or more is visible with the naked eye. At its brightest, C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) will have a magnitude between 4 and 5. That will be in two weeks.

On 7 January, the comet will make its closest approach to us — about 40 million miles away. But it won’t be at its brightest then. It will be brighter when it gets closer to the sun. But right now, you ought to be able to see it — just barely. Of course, you won’t be able to see it where I live. My neighborhood is swimming in light. It really is an abomination. But I’m going to take a long walk tonight and see if I can get far enough away to see it with some binoculars.

Finding it should not be hard. It is swinging by Orion. Right now it is at just below and to the right of his right foot. Here’s a star chart from Sky and Telescope:

But I should warn you: going out to see a comet is like going to see a rock concert — better in theory than in practice. Watching a DVD of a concert is generally much more fun with far better sound and not standing on a concrete floor being trampled by people pretending that they know the song based on the first three notes. I’ve seen a few comets in my day, including the stupendously disappointing 1986 appearance of Halley’s Comet. My main memory of all comet sightings is that of being cold.

Be that as it may, it is important to suffer the discomfort and disappointment of great events. And the chance to see C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is more than a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is a once in a hundred lifetimes experience, since this comet doesn’t visit very often — just once every ten thousand years or so. So be a good neighbor: run outside, look up at Orion, and wave hello to C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). That way, when your grandchildren ask you what it was like to see the comet, you can say, “All I remember is that I was cold.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Christmas Tweets

National Review: Smarter than ThouIn an indirect way, I’ve been very critical of Neil deGrasse Tyson. I’ve written a couple of complaining articles about Cosmos, the most recent being, Cosmos and the Lack of Politics. And the truth is, I’m not a fan of Tyson. I think it dates back to seeing him talking about how the gravity differentials as you were pulled into a black hole would cause you to be be ripped apart. That’s fine, but Tyson said that it would probably be the coolest way to die. All I could think was that this guy either suffered from a lack of empathy or a lack of imagination. But I’ll admit that since then, he’s seemed like an all right guy.

Thanks to the good people at The Young Turks, I learned about a collection of Christmas tweets from Tyson that greatly improved my opinion of the man. Here is the first:

It’s just kind of mindless fun — not very meaningful. But it offended some for the usual reason: American Christians don’t like the idea of anyone claiming that theirs is just a religion like many others. I really like this one because it is a truth that many do not like to hear:

And start taking Easter more seriously because it really ought to be the one really important holiday for you if you were at all serious about your religion — which you aren’t. Okay, but enough religion. Let’s get on to the real Christmas physics:

There’s a sociological side to this too. What happened to Benny? I assume he starved to death because Santa couldn’t find any use for him. If he was very lucky, he was good at dentistry and got a job working for Hermey. But here is the tweet that caused the most fuss:

Indeed, the Christmas before last, I featured Newton in the birthday post, Happy Newton’s Day! Anyway, I think the tweet speaks for itself. But if you want more, read Tyson’s article about it, My Most Retweeted Tweet. There is no doubt that Newton is more important in the history of the world than Jesus. I say this because if it hadn’t been Jesus, it would have been some other mythical being. There is nothing special about Jesus. But I don’t expect Christians to agree with me.

Afterword

On new year’s eve, Tyson tweeted out his four favorite Twilight Zone episodes. One of them was, “The Invaders” — a truly great episode despite the silly art direction. It’s more than made up with by a great performance by Agnes Moorehead and a great ending. Similarly, “Monsters on Maple Street” is a great one — as true today as it was in 1960. “The Shelter” perhaps shows that Tyson is something of a cynic. But fourth on his list was, “To Serve Man.” I don’t understand this. This is a favorite episode for many people. But it’s just a stupid pun expanded into a half hour of television. And what is that all about? The scientists can translate the title but not the text? The alien language would have the same ambiguous word meaning both “care for” and “prepare for dinner”? And why would the aliens give their cookbook to the humans? It’s just the silliest episode ever.
