Anniversary Post: Harpers Ferry Raid

John BrownOn this day in 1859, John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry occurred. I’ll be honest: I’ve never known what to think of it and I still don’t know what to think about it. Can it be justified? Well, given the magnitude of the sin of American slavery, I think a case can be made. But it does have rather too much in common with people today who think that abortion represents another Holocaust and that it justifies killing doctors.

I do think there many distinctions here. To begin with, abortion is an issue that only recently came on the radar of protestants. And they aren’t at all consistent. The vast majority who believe abortion is wrong have no problem with the death penalty. This is equivalent to the case where John Brown killed people to free black slaves but was completely okay with having Native American slaves.

Another issue is that John Brown was trying to start an uprising that would destroy the institution of slavery itself. As I discussed some time ago, Brown thought that he could do this with very little bloodshed. Before he died, he realized that he was wrong; and the country soon learned it too. What is it that someone like Scott Roeder was trying to accomplish? Did he think that the murder of George Tiller would be the end of abortion in America? I suspect not. I suspect that “thinking” wasn’t really involved with what he was doing.

There is also the issue that an act done in the name of what is right is more justified than an act done in the name of what is wrong. No, ends do not justify means. But motive matters. I understand that anti-abortion activists believe that they are right. That doesn’t make them so, however. In particular, they are mostly unwilling to do anything at all to reduce abortion other than to make it illegal. In fact, as a movement, it has been all in favor of banning birth control. If your concern were really about unborn “babies,” wouldn’t you do everything you could to prevent them? Wouldn’t that even including taxing people more to help out poor mothers?

What’s more, John Brown’s goal was attainable: the end of slavery. Abortions will never be wiped out, because the vast majority of them happen naturally. Miscarriages are spontaneous abortions. And once again, we come back to the almost total disinterest of anti-choice crusaders. Better prenatal care would prevent far more abortions than any laws. But again: that would require something of the anti-choice activists, and so is not considered.

I still don’t know if John Brown was right. In general, I don’t believe in violence. But I think a case can be made for what he did. There is no case that can be made for those against abortion who turn to violence.

Anniversary Post: Black Panther Party

Black PowerOn or about this date in 1966, the Black Panther Party was started in Oakland, California. In the early 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement made huge positive change in the south. But in northern cities, things hadn’t changed. The issue wasn’t voting rights. It was poverty, lack of opportunity, and police violence. Interestingly, these are same problems communities of color face today.

The Black Panthers was started by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale out of the Black Power movement. It was actually quite an intellectual group. That was true of the whole Black Power movement. But to the white suburban middle class, they were terrifying. Of course, the white middle class had also helped to created the group — by segregating themselves in the suburbs and leaving the cities to die economically.

What’s been getting a lot of attention recently is the Mulford Act. All the conservatives today are against any form of gun control. But the conservatives sure were in favor of it in 1967 when they saw black men with legitimate grievances carrying guns. Such a thing was enough to get Ronald Reagan signing gun control laws, that’s for sure.

Anniversary Post: Massachusetts Bans Quakers

Salem Witch TrialOn this day in 1656, Massachusetts enacts the first punitive law against the Quakers. The colony was set up in 1620, so that’s 36 years without systematizing their religious intolerance. Of course, that gives entirely the wrong idea, because the Quakers didn’t come until later. The only reason I find this interesting is because — like most Americans — from a young age, I had this idea crammed down my throat that the Pilgrims came to America for religious freedom.

That wasn’t true, of course. The truth was that the Pilgrims did suffer oppression in England. So they moved to Holland. And there they found freedom of religion. But they found it economically difficult. The young people were wandering off to find jobs. Many of the older Pilgrims moved back to England. When things like this happen, you would think people would wonder if God really did have their backs.

Anyway, so they made it to America where they found it necessary to enact laws to stop other religions, because like most religious people, they don’t actually think that God has their backs. It’s all about power. And the best way to protect your particular form of religion is by not letting anyone compare it to any other form of religion.

It’s interesting that Philadelphia became the biggest and most prosperous city in America by the start of the Revolutionary War. Why? Because the Quakers settled it and governed it liberally. Meanwhile, Massachusetts became something of a backwater. By 1692, it was charming all the colonies with its Salem witch trials, where 20 people were executed.

Ain’t freedom of religion grand!

Anniversary Post: Claudius’ Poisoning

ClaudiusOn this day in 54 CE, Emperor Claudius was murdered. I regret to inform you that he was not as charming as Derek Jacobi in I, Claudius. But the series is mostly right. He did have some handicaps that might have been the result of cerebral palsy. His family was incredibly cruel to him as a result. I mean, they were Romans, after all! But this was his secret weapon. It is because of his ailments that he was kept to the side of things and managed to not get murdered. He was also apparently smart and a very good historian.

He was also something of a drunk and a big fan of gladiatorial “games.” And he had a hot temper. I suppose all of this could be smoothed away in a couple of ways. First, none of this makes him particularly different from the rest of his family. And the cruelty that he experienced would tend to have negative effects on a person. He was, regardless, a decent emperor — by the standards of the job and the time.

He was almost certainly poisoned by his last wife, Agrippina. Of course, she wouldn’t have done it — just called for it to be done. She really wanted to get her son (from another marriage) Nero to become emperor. And it was looking like Claudius might put a stop to that, given that he hated her by the end. Of course, Claudius didn’t do badly. He was 63 years old at his death. Compare that to Caligula, who came before: stabbed to death at 28. Or Nero, who came after: committed suicide (The first Roman Emperor to do so!) at the age of 30.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Jake FlanaginCities across the United States and Canada are finally starting to wake up to the damage wrought by Columbus’ expedition, acknowledging why it’s wrong to blindly worship a man for essentially jump-starting the systemic extermination of two continents worth of indigenous societies. Several of these cities have begun to institute Indigenous Peoples’ Day in its place. And that’s a step in the right direction.

But we can’t just change the name of the holiday if we aren’t also addressing Columbus Day’s de facto erasure of Native American history.

Beyond cursory examinations of the Inca, the Maya, and the Aztecs, students in North America are generally taught hemispheric history from 1492 onward. Rarely do we see social studies curricula spend much time on the fascinating exploits of the Olmec, the mound-building practices of Poverty Point culture, or intricate trade routes of the Caribbean Arawak. Students are not taught about the complex, nonverbal “wampum” constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy, or the singular architectural stylings of the Anasazi…

Essentially, this educational strategy frames the entire Native American experience as one of tragedy — which, over the last three hundred years or so, it certainly has been — but totally neglects the fact that pre-Columbian America was just as diverse, socially and politically complicated, and frankly exciting as Europe or the Middle East. There was warfare, diplomatic intrigue, rich mythology; innovation in the arts, sciences, and mathematics, and so much more going on than modern history books would have you believe.

The Americas didn’t simply spring out of the ocean just so our Genoese “hero” could plant a Spanish flag in her. In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue… and that’s about it. Native Americans absolutely should have their own holiday. But thousands of years of history and culture deserve so much more recognition than one Monday a year.

Anniversary Post: Death of Magellan

MagellanOn this day in 1994, the Magellan spacecraft stopped transmitting after four years. It had two primary goals: map the surface and gravitational field of the toxic cloud covered planet. Venus is in many ways like Earth. It is almost exactly the same size and density. They both seem to have a similar internal structures. They are both losing heat at the same rate. Yet, as Carl Sagan put it: earth is like heaven and Venus is like hell.

Venus’ surface pressure is almost a hundred times the surface pressure here on earth. Standing on the surface of Venus would be like being a half mile under the ocean. You know: deadly. But it’s worse than that, because it is also incredibly hot. It is 860°F, which is, you know, hotter than any regular kitchen oven. In fact, it is even hotter than the hottest pizza ovens. Venus is very, very hot. In fact, it is hotter than Mercury at noon, even though Venus only gets 25% as much energy from the sun.

The reason for this is because almost 97% of Venus’ atmosphere is composed of carbon-dioxide. This creates the mother of all greenhouse effects. This fact combines with two other aspects of Venus to create a very constant temperature: almost no axial tilt (just 3° compared to 23.5° for Earth) and almost a circular orbit around the sun (eccentricity of 0.007 compared to 0.017 for the Earth). So day, night, pole, or equator, Venus is just too hot even for cooking pizzas. But the temperature does decrease with altitude. So on top of Maxwell Montes — the highest point on Venus at 7 miles — it is only about 700°F. And you know what that means: great pizza oven temperature! (Fun fact: there may be lead sulfide “snow” on top of Maxwell Montes!)

The Magellan mission made a number of discoveries about Venus. For example, it found that the surface was young. It is covered with volcanic material. It appears to have river-like lava flows. It is also geologically active, but doesn’t seem to have plate tectonics. And there is little evidence of wind erosion. Now this is actually something I know a little bit about. First, Venus rotates very slowly (and in the wrong direction), so not much in the way of Coriolis effect. And there are no temperature gradients, so not much mixing due to that. So the atmosphere is very static.

But in September 1994, NASA announced that it was ending Magellan because its solar arrays were decaying and all the mission objectives had been met. So they put it into a gradually decaying orbit. On 11 October, it was down to roughly 85 miles above the surface of Venus. The atmosphere was thick enough at that height to cause the solar arrays to to heat up to 260°F. Two days later, Magellan went around the far side of Venus, and we never heard back. Most of it burned up, but it is assumed that parts of it crashed landed on the surface. Farewell, Magellan!

Anniversary Post: Two Jokes, One Intentional

Mario BiaggiOn this day exactly 40 years ago, Saturday Night Live premiered on television. I have all kinds of problems with the show, but one thing most people don’t want to admit is that it always just moderately successful. Think about it. The first big star to come out of the show was Chevy Chase. Now I don’t have anything especially against him, and I still think his 1980 album, Chevy Chase, was a unique comedic work. It was also something of an aberration in a career of almost uninterrupted mediocrity. And that was what people were just crazy about that first season.

But there were really great things on the show. Andy Kaufman was on it. It had some amazing stuff from Michael O’Donoghue. There was and always has been a decent amount of stuff to like. But it didn’t take very long for the show to give up even a pretense to having any edge. I can’t imagine that it would offend anyone for the last 35 years at least. Oh, except for Sinead O’Connor — who like so many other people were banned from the “edgy” show for coming anywhere near being edgy.

But an even bigger joke took place exactly a year later: President Ford signed Public Law 94-479. And what did this important piece of legislation do? It appointed George Washington posthumously to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States. What’s more, it was done retroactively to the date 4 July 1976. It is a stunningly pathetic thing to do.

Understand: I think these kinds of symbolic gestures are important. But doing this for George Washington?! Like Washington had been mistreated by history? It was introduced by Democrat Mario Biaggi. He was an interesting guy, who only died a couple of months ago at the age of 97. Most of his Wikipedia page is dedicated to his conviction for corruption, which got him sentenced to 8 years. (He only served a couple for health reasons, which is strange, given he lived another 24 years after his release.) But the other big part of his Wikipedia page is this stupid law. Such were his accomplishments: selling favors and celebrating over-celebrated figures from our history.

So there you go: two jokes in one anniversary post.

Anniversary Post: Double Tenth Incident

TortureOn this day in 1943 was the Double Tenth incident. This was during the Japanese occupation of Singapore. On 26 September 1943, an Australian military unit had carried out Operation Jaywick. It resulted in the sinking of seven ships. The Japanese were understandably not pleased. So on 10 October 1943, the Japanese Military Police arrested and tortured 57 Singapore civilians for taking part in the attack. Of course, none of them had anything to do with it — Operation Jaywick was a total outside job. Fifteen of the arrested civilians died in jail.

I’m pretty fond of the Japanese. But it all shows how any group of people can be just awful. It’s hard to imagine the Japanese doing that sort of thing any time in the next century. They’ve so internalized the lessons of World War II. But who can we image torturing again? The United States. That’s because we’ve never dealt with our past wrongs. We’ve treated our past the way we always have: by ignoring it like a dysfunctional family with a history of addiction and child abuse.

It is only through admission of our wrongs that we can grow. This is one of the big reasons that the United States is a dying empire.

Anniversary Post: Kepler’s Supernova

Kepler's SupernovaOn this day in 1604, Kepler’s Supernova was first observed. It wouldn’t be noticed by Johannes Kepler until a week later, but he observed it for a year and published a book about it. It’s an important event because it was the last time a supernova was observed in our galaxy. (We observe them in other galaxies.) And that’s really interesting if you consider that just 32 years earlier, Kepler’s colleague Tycho Brahe had observed another supernova. So two supernovas in a small span of time, and then nothing for over 400 years. But that’s the way random events are.

In general, a supernova would have to be closer than 100 light-years from the Earth to have an effect on us. Statistically, we should have one within 33 light-years every 250 million years. That’s one of the things about us being out here on the edge of the galaxy: it’s kind of boring. But it is probably also necessary for the development of advanced life. Further in, life on the Earth would have likely been destroyed before it got too far.

Kepler’s Supernova is thought to have been something on the order of 20,000 light years away. The one Brahe observed was less than half that distance. Still, these supernovas were far, far away — where they belong.

Anniversary Post: 2005 Kashmir Earthquake

2005 Kashmir EarthquakeOn this day, exactly ten years ago, the Kashmir earthquake occurred. It killed over 86,000 people — and displaced almost three million. Its aftershocks were substantial all by themselves. One of was 6.4 magnitude — not that much less powerful than the most powerful earthquake I’ve ever experienced, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. And compared to most people, I’m laxidasical about earthquakes. I’m sure I would have terrified living through this quake — if I did manage to do so.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6. It was felt as far away as Afghanistan and China. More than 70% of the casualties were in the city of Muzaffarabad. That’s remarkable when you consider that the current population of the city is slightly less than 100,000. Smaller towns were apparently reduced to rubble. It’s hard to imagine. And the infrastructure in the area was not up to the task of rescue. Communication was virtually cut off. But in the end, over $5 billion in relief did make it to the area. And life continues on.

Here’s one for James Fillmore: in 1956, Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series in MLB history. Is that because there just haven’t been that many World Series games, or because of something about the competition in the World Series? That sounds like a good subject for an article. Unfortunately, Larsen never played for the Twins — or even the Senators.

Anniversary Post: First Image of Far Side of Moon

First Picture of Other Side of MoonOn this day in 1959, the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft transmitted the first ever pictures of the far side of the Moon. I thought we might take this opportunity to discuss why it is that the same side of the Moon is always facing us. Although I should tell you that this is not exactly true. I think we are able to see about 55% of the Moon’s surface, because it jiggles. But for all intents and purposes, we see the same moon each night. This is because it is tidally locked.

The Moon once rotated rapidly. But over time, the Earth’s gravitational field slowed it. The force from the Earth produces a bulge in the part of the moon that is directly facing the Earth — and also directly opposite (just like the Moon created tides on Earth). This has the effect of squishing down the sides, so that the moon looks like a football with the pointy end facing Earth. Of course, the deformation isn’t anywhere near that great. But that’s the basic idea.

While the Moon was spinning fast, the bulge was always slightly after the direct line. As a result, the gravitational field had a net torque on the Moon, slowing its rotation. The effect was very small. But it’s amazing what you can accomplish in a billion years. I used to tell my students to image the Moon (or any other tidally locked object like Mercury) as if it were a frying plan. The handle would always be facing just a little off center from the Earth, and would thus be constantly pulled slightly in the opposite direction of the Moon’s rotation.

Luna 3 was the first mission specifically meant to photograph the other side of the Moon. Luna 1, sent in January of that year, was meant to crash on the Moon. It missed. (Don’t laugh: we missed the Moon the first time we tried.) And it became the first human object to go into orbit around the Sun. Luna 2, sent in September, actually hit the Moon. Later, in February 1966, Luna 9 would be the first spacecraft to make a soft landing on the Moon (or any other place).

The radio signal on Luna 3 was so weak, that the spacecraft had to get almost all the way back to Earth in order to transmit its 18 images. The one above is the first transmitted back. I think we humans have become far too cavalier about this kind of stuff. What we now do in space is mind boggling. It’s always nice to go back five or six decades and see what we were doing and just how hard it was. Oh, and no one knows for sure what happened to Luna 3. But it probably burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Anniversary Post: Bellerophon

Star WobbleOn this day in 1995 — 20 years ago — Bellerophon (51 Pegasi b) was discovered. It was the first planet discovered to be orbiting around a Sun like star — 51 Pegasi. It was the second exoplanet ever discovered. And it is quite a planet, which destroyed some theories about solar system formation. It is a very big planet: roughly half the mass of Jupiter. But it is really close to 51 Pegasi — just 0.05 AU, which is six times closer than Mercury is to the Sun. The year on Bellerophon is four Earth days long.

Bellerophon was discovered the way that about half of all exoplanets have been discovered: with Doppler spectroscopy. I put the animation above (courtesy of Zhatt at Wikipedia) so that you would see how this works. As I’ve discussed before, Jupiter doesn’t actually orbit around the Sun; it orbits around the center of mass of it and the Sun (forget the rest of the solar system for now). But as a result, the Sun also orbits around the center of mass of the solar system.

As a result of Jupiter, the Sun wobbles — changing speed by about 12 m/s over the course of one Jupiter orbit (12 years). Since the 1990s, we’ve had equipment capable of detecting Jupiter if we were observing from another solar system. In the case of 51 Pegasi, the wobble was much greater: 70 m/s. But in the early 2000s, new systems were installed that could detect wobbles as small as 0.3 m/s. And soon, we should have systems that can detect wobbles of just 0.1 m/s. That last one is important because the Earth induces a 0.1 m/s wobble in the Sun. It’s very exciting.
