I found the following Weird Al Yankovic live concert. Looking at the audience at the beginning, I thought: they are white and nerdy. The show sounds quite a lot like They Might Be Giants. It hadn’t even occurred to me before just now that John Linnell is also an accordion player.
In addition, what a great band he has. Of course that isn’t hard. It’s really kind of like hiring an accountant. If you are willing to pay, they will play. But the music is still vibrant. And it is a really well put together show. You might remember that I mentioned last week that I thought that Stop Making Sense was pretentious. But Weird Al Yankovic shows that you can put together a really tight piece of entertainment without annoying me.
Anyway, this week has made me appreciate Yankovic more than I did before. Of course, I’m not going to run out and buy any of his work. I feel a little old for it anyway. I’m more inclined to pour a drink and sob through some Jacques Brel.
I wished he had been picked for the Superbowl half time show. He does such a good job that he is the only musical act I like to watch live.
He would do a great job with that. But I can’t imagine it ever happening. If I watched the Super Bowl, I would definitely skip the halftime show.
I have never watched the Superbowl. I haven’t watched the commercials, I haven’t watched the half time show but I have oddly enough watched the Tour De France.
My father was a bit weird on his sports.
I admire athletes. But mostly I find it boring to watch them. Baseball is about it. I had a friend in grad school who was really in biking and he watched races on television. I certainly didn’t get that. But it’s hard to appreciate something you know nothing about. Just the same, when I was younger, I was a rather good tennis player. But it is the worst on television. You can’t see any of what the game is really all about.
Using a net on a stick to bounce balls around?
I like playing jai alai oddly enough but I don’t watch it.
Looks like racquetball with those curvy things. I used to play racquetball too, but tennis is a more sophisticated game.
