Steve Schmidt Another Republican Lackey

Steve SchmidtI just saw Steve Schmidt on The Rachel Maddow Show. They were talking about the internals of the campaign. Mostly, I thought it was a lot of nonsense. Schmidt claims to know a lot of things that I don’t think he does. But I can give him the benefit of the doubt.

Then they discussed the polls. Schmidt claimed that the Romney campaign really believes they are going to win on Tuesday. This is a ridiculous claim. If Romney felt he was really going to win on Tuesday, he wouldn’t be changing his whole campaign strategy with two days until the election to try for a long shot win in Pennsylvania where Obama is consistently up by 3% to 8%.

Watching the show, all I could think was, “This guy is an MSNBC analyst?!” Because he wasn’t acting like an analyst. He was acting like a Romney surrogate. I’ve noticed over the last year that the closer we get to the election, the more Schmidt has become indistinguishable from an RNC lackey.

See if you agree. I think MSNBC needs to find someone new. At the moment, Michael Steele is a more insightful commentator than Steve Schmidt.

  1. Is it just me or does it seem Michael Steele gained about 50 IQ points after he left the RNC chair and became an MSNBC analyst? I agree with you about Schmidt, he always tries to spin for Romney.

  2. @Andy – I think that Steele *has* improved, but he wasn’t that bad while heading the RNC. I think it is more the Quayle effect where he was only covered when he screwed up. He is still highly partisan, but he isn’t always on message.

I just had a thought: conservatives hate Joe Biden because he is occasionally off message. But liberals like Michael Steele because he is occasionally off message. What’s up with that? Could it be that conservatives see that Biden is effective?

  3. I know all about Romney pushing for Pennsylvania. If I see another Romney ad I’m gonna pop. There were three in a row during a football game my dad was watching on Sunday!

Up until the last two weeks I haven’t seen as many ads as I had expected, but then again I don’t watch a lot of TV. I do watch enough that I’m surprised at the lack of ads over the last few months, however. Now it’s like he’s trying to catch up in the last days of the campaign.

I must say, though, that the Warren County Tea Party yard and roadside signs are much worse than any TV ad I’ve seen.
