{"id":20672,"date":"2013-05-08T00:05:51","date_gmt":"2013-05-08T07:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/franklycurious.com\/wp\/?p=20672"},"modified":"2016-04-05T21:22:06","modified_gmt":"2016-04-06T04:22:06","slug":"learning-styles-math","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/franklycurious.com\/wp\/2013\/05\/08\/learning-styles-math\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Styles and Math"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The truth is, we don&#8217;t all learn in the same way.\u00a0 We have our own, unique learning styles.\u00a0 The three most basic categories of these are auditory, visual, and tactile\/kinesthetic.\u00a0 Some children might learn better while listening to the teacher, or maybe looking at illustrations and graphs.\u00a0 Others might learn better doing hands-on activities.<\/p>\n<p>Like my son, many kids with ADHD do better when they can touch and move while they are learning.\u00a0 As a homeschool mom, I have researched educational methods that complement my son&#8217;s individual learning style, which is primarily a combination of visual and tactile\/kinesthetic.\u00a0 Since I am relatively new to homeschooling, I have so much more to learn.\u00a0 The amount of resources available is actually overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>For now I will just give some input on math.\u00a0 This past year, we&#8217;ve been working with the <a title=\"RightStart Mathematics\" href=\"http:\/\/rightstartmath.com\/\">RightStart Mathematics<\/a> program.\u00a0 The really great things about it are all the manipulatives and games that are included, so my son can touch, see, and do.\u00a0 Also, the instruction seems more interactive and conceptual than many math programs I have come across, and the lessons have been easy for me to teach.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t say it&#8217;s perfect.\u00a0 My son still has difficulty focusing sometimes, which leads to some frustration and conflict.\u00a0 This conflict is largely avoided, however, by taking more frequent breaks and limiting the length of the sessions.\u00a0 Overall, I definitely recommend the Right Start program.<\/p>\n<p>The following are recommendations by other homeschool parents for kids who are more visual and tactile:<\/p>\n<p>*<a title=\"Math-U-See\" href=\"http:\/\/mathusee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Math-U-See<\/a><br \/>\n*<a title=\"Touch Math\" href=\"http:\/\/www.touchmath.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Touch Math<\/a><br \/>\n*<a title=\"Teaching Textbooks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingtextbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teaching Textbooks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of these programs have really great websites which allow you to make an informed decision.\u00a0 I&#8217;m strongly thinking about Teaching Textbooks for next year, just to see how it is.\u00a0 It is interactive and mostly computer-based using CD-ROMs.\u00a0 My son is such a techno kid that he might really like it.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about learning styles, I recommend the following books:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Discover-Your-Childs-Learning-Style\/dp\/0761520139\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1368405102&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=discover+your+child%27s+learning+style&amp;tag=frankcurio-20\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Discover Your Child&#8217;s Learning Style<\/em><\/a> by Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Kindle Hodson<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Multiple-Intelligences-Horizons-Practice-ebook\/dp\/B001JEGOCY\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1368405340&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=Multiple+Intelligences%3A+New&amp;tag=frankcurio-20\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Multiple Intelligences:\u00a0 New Horizons in Theory and Practice<\/em><\/a> by Howard E.
