For 9/11: Remembering “Liberal” Icon Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens

Watching the towers fall in New York, with civilians incinerated on the planes and in the buildings, I felt something that I couldn’t analyze at first and didn’t fully grasp … until the day itself was nearly over. I am only slightly embarrassed to tell you that this was a feeling of exhilaration. Here we are then, I was thinking, in a war to the finish between everything I love and everything I hate. Fine. We will win and they will lose. A pity that we let them pick the time and place of the challenge, but we can and we will make up for that.

–Christopher Hitchens

It still amazes me how many supposed liberals praise this awful man. Some people never get over crushes. It’s sad. I can watch old C-SPAN segments with Hitchens when he wasn’t a warmonger. But any good he did during that time was swamped by the vile work of the last decade of his life.

  1. Hitchens went to the point of undergoing waterboarding to then write about how it was an acceptable means of torture. Which is the dumbest use of press credentials, ever. I mean, imagine it. “I’m a columnist at Vanity Fair, I want to write about waterboarding, but I promise I’ll be in favor of it.” Who do you even call to set that up?

My favorite Hitchens obituary was this one by Dave Zirin: https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/being-spit-upon-literally-christopher-hitchens/

Just goes to show, you never know who’s out there reading your stuff. In Zirin’s case, Hitchens was! But it didn’t go well.

    • I’ve doubtless said it before but the main thing I hated about Hitchens is that he continued to support his earlier socialist writing. Greenwald does the same thing. These people just won’t admit to ever being wrong. They both (Especially Greenwald!) remind me of Trump.

I read that obit at the time. I read almost anything I could find that was critical of him. Another thing I hate is the way that being charming is thought to offset being an authoritarian asshole.
